Rollout Roundup: Breaking Down the Best Rollouts of the Week - 8.23.24
This week we dive into the rollouts of Sabrina Carpenter and Cash Cobain.
Welcome back to Rollout Roundup, where I break down the best (and worst) marketing rollout moves of the week. If you’re new here, thanks for reading! My name is Olivia, and I own a music marketing company called Amethyst Collab, where I work with GRAMMY-winning, Billboard-charting artists on creative rollout strategies with a focus on digital marketing. Let’s dive in!
Sabrina Carpenter - Short n’ Sweet (Album)
Strengths: Sabrina Carpenter’s star is rapidly rising, and for this rollout, her team proved they are up for the challenge. Starting off strong with the timing of her 2 charting records: “Espresso” and “Please Please Please.” Following up “Espresso” with a different but equally catchy bop was a masterclass in how to sustain a moment. Sabrina also led both songs with strong visual components, including stunning on-brand music videos, new press photos, and a consistent social media presence.
Her Erewhon smoothie collaboration put her alongside the high-end grocery store’s former collaborators Hailey Bieber and Bella Hadid, further showing us she’s here to stay as a main pop girl.
Since we talked about the power of good captions in my last newsletter, I want to discuss how great Sabrina’s captions have been. It matters more than you think! She strikes the perfect balance of engaging with her community and putting herself out there.
What I would do differently: I would go a step further and create a lasting pop culture moment - work it out on the remix with Olivia Rodrigo. Even a picture of them together would break the internet.
I also think some superfan engagement was missing. She could have given her top .001% of listeners an early playback and taped their reactions for content. I would love to see how she can reward her “day one” fans now that her stardom is reaching new heights.
While Sabrina’s rollout has checked all the right boxes, I would love to see a little more out-of-the-box creativity from a team that has one of the hottest rising pop stars and likely a big budget to run with.
Cash Cobain — PLAY CASH COBAIN (Album)
Strengths: Cash Cobain has a different audience than Sabrina Carpenter, and he certainly knows how to engage them. While I love many things about this rollout, the consistent theme is that Cash Cobain and his team know how to set trends, they don’t just follow them. From his internet-breaking “Problem” remix to an Ice Spice collaboration that just made sense, Cash Cobain has some of the most interesting moves in music all summer.
Cash also does one of my favorite things an artist can do - interacts with fans and haters alike on Twitter (X). He doesn’t shy away from searching his name and entering the chat whenever he sees fit. He and Sabrina prove, with their successful use of social media, the era of mysterious celebrities is over, we want relatability now.
I also want to talk about Cash Cobain’s PR team. Their use of legacy media with a rising artist is a masterclass in crafting the perfect angle. Seeing him in the New York Times is exciting, and a break in the popular belief that rap artists must be pigeon-holed into traditional XXL interviews for every album.
What I would do differently: I would love to see a high fashion editorial for Cash, including an avante garde photo shoot. I could see someone like PAPER or even VOGUE picking this up. I would also love to see Cash Cobain collabing with a main pop artist, bringing him into the mainstream eye of attention that he is so clearly prepared for.
