Rollout Round 7: The Best Marketing Rollouts of the Week
I'm not sure any of this week's artist's fanbases overlap, but that's what makes it interesting. Tune in for my marketing critiques.
City Girls - Twerkulator (SINGLE)
It’s finally time for the Twerkulator!
Strengths: Following several Tik Tok viral dances, a clearance challenge, and Twitter’s claim that this is the “song of the summer” contender, Twerkulator finally got cleared. Now the most exciting part of this song, besides the fact that hot girl summer is saved, is the shoot that JT and Yung Miami had for the cover art. From the behind the scenes shoot video, to the “post” controversy with the Clermont Twins, the City Girls always know how to hold a moment.
Weaknesses: Caresha and JT please get on TikTok again! Please!! Also - I would love to see the City Girls step out of their comfort zone visually. I have a feeling that’s coming with this next shoot…
A Boogie - 24 Hours ft. Lil Durk (SINGLE)
Artist has been giving us a lot to look at lately! Drama with Ella, a soft-launched name change, and teasing his upcoming album “A-Boogie Vs Artist”, the Bronx rapper has marked his return.
Strengths: King of going viral on TikTok without even trying. Amazing use of social media especially on Instagram. Very good at teasing his upcoming ventures and giving us caption-worthy anecdotes via his story.
Weaknesses: Where is Durk?! Can we get a collaborative press shoot?! I’ll fly him out myself for it!
Olivia Rodrigo - Sour (ALBUM)
The other Olivia is making a name for herself. I guess I don’t mind sharing the spotlight with her…
Strengths: From A+ creative direction, to every single she’s released going TikTok viral, to a Taylor Swift sample, Olivia is giving the pop girls everything they need. She’s creative, spunky, and passionate in SOUR, and went to bat for her right as a teenage girl to write love songs during the rollout. She gives great fan interactions, and does a great job of marketing her songs to the perfect target audience. This album is a huge era-marker for her.
Weaknesses: Normally with pop, I tend to find the marketing of pop artists generally cookie-cutter and inauthentic. Olivia defies this. Being an ex-Disney star, she had quite a bit to prove to the public eye, and it seems she did it well. I would like to see her with some more visuals outside of the press shoot for this album! Can we get some more high-budget looks from her?
